Will braces help with TMJ symptoms
I have had TMJ for about 15 years and can't deal with the pain any longer. I was wondering if I get braces that will correct my bite, will that help reduce the pain and other symptoms associated with TMJ. Thanks in advance to all who answer.
Answer:Hey! I have TMJ for almost 15 years and after i complaint to my dentist he sent me to orthodontist. I got braces and wore them for 2 years. During the treatment my tmj symptoms almost completely went away. I was very happy. And yes let me tell you i had over bite and orto told me because of overbite my jaw is hearting. Now I took my braces out, my over bite almost didn't change :( and my pain came back...... :(((( I just true away $3500.00 . and two years of agony was for nothing. I am not sure if my orthodontist wasn't good specialist (because i heard many complaints about her). or it was to late for me to correct the overbite. but I am again suffering from headaches and tmj other symptoms. So i guess it depends on your age (by the way i am 33), and on your specific case of TMJ, My advice is go to surgeon first and then go to several orthodontists, and then make a right decision. GOOD LUCK>
umm...What is TMJ????? never heard of it
They could if they help your jaw to align better, it depends on what is causing the dysfunction.
I had braces when I was younger, I have TMJ now and I find the splint at bedtime takes care of my problem.
From my experiance no. I have a tmj problem as well and I had braces on for two and a half years and it has been 3 years since I got them off and I still have it pretty bad. I also had to wear one of those gaurds but I had to wear all the time. My doctor says the only other choice is surgery (its that bad) which unforunately I'll probably half to have. Good luck to you.
