For example when someone gets hit in the face, they walk away from it to try and "ease it off" when it doesn't really seem to make much difference.

Answer:

I think people are just trying to gather their thoughts together.

When you get hurt besides the initial jolt of pain you have an emotional response. So, when you walk away you are trying to marshall all your senses to either handle the pain or make sense of it. It might not outwardly appear as if it makes a difference but I think it makes a huge one


Maybe to them it is easier to walk away than to have to deal with the problem...
I think it's instinctive to walk away to prevent yourself from getting hurt again.
It could be partly the "flight" choice of the "fight or flight" response to violence or danger.
