When going for a medical operation, they ask you to remove all jewellery etc. especially anything metal. Why is this?

Answer:

The reason for this is that the main part of the cutting in an operation is done by an electrical current. This minimalises bleeding. Wearing metal will short the circuit out and cause a burn.

i think it's to do with any x-ray's they might do?while operating,or if you die on the table they cant be accused of robbing your jewlery off you!!!!!!!

It's for your own safety - it may get lost inside you, or gets heated by surgical instruments and burn you.

Becuase it can obstruct access to parts of the body, they're not insured to damage of personal items, and if you have an X-ray or a gamma-ray, it can be potentially dangerous, and also block a proper scan, also, in the caseof stuff like MRI's, they can electrically charge them.

The doctors want all metal removed incase you need to have an x-ray done, or Cat scan, or even on the rare occasion something goes wrong and you do need to be shocked.

Many times during surgery, an electrical instrument is used for cutting/cauterizing, and they want to make sure nothing interferes with it that could potentially harm you. Also, the hospital wants to cover their butt in the event that you woke up and any valuable jewelry was missing!

during surgery electrical currents are used for making incisions to reduce bleeding...this machine is called a diathermy machine...if you had jewellery on the current could pass through it and burning would occur on the body..thats why u have to remove your jewellery and metal objects eg piercings

you should remove it, some will tape it, the reason is it is a fire hazard they are working with oxygen and any spark from metal can cause a huge fire/explosion. Good luck
