Paxil and birth control pills

health advisory Hospital Mental Health 2007-11-15 19:02:19

Does anyone have any info or experience that says that birth control pills can make Paxil stop working? I've been on 10 mg of Paxil since December for panic disorder/depression, and I've been doing great...the thing is, I started taking birth control pills (Ortho-cyclen) last Sunday. I started to feel a little down on Wednesday, but I figured that I was just tired. On Friday, my boyfriend and I had an argument, and by Saturday, I was a blubbering mess...I mean, it was almost like I wasn't medicated at all. I've been down, I haven't wanted to eat, and I just want to sleep, and today, for the first time in 2 months, I had to take an Ativan for a serious panic attack....funny, I haven't had any issues until after I started te birth control. Anybody have any input? Could it even be that I need a higher dosage of the Paxil? Any thoughts?

Answer:

it may have nothing to do with the paxil it could be the kinda birth control. since having my son i have not been able to be on birth control bc it makes me so moody and anxious. its trying to regulate your hormones while the paxil is regulating ur chemicals. putting unnatural things in our body is always asking for trouble, at least thats what ive experienced in the past, sometimes we dont have a choice though, research ur bc and talk to ur dr. i use yaz, what kind were u put on? i also used to be on paxil for years. im here for u if you wana chat, i to have the same issues. heres my e-mail jensmithlpn@yahoo.com

you should see Dr=you either need a higher dosage of paxil or a different antidepressant all together ok
Your doctor should know that you are taking paxil and wouldnt give you birthcontrol pills if it wouldnt mix together... but let him know what you are feeling and what he suggests... but i personally havent heard of this, ive heard of pills not making the birthcontrol pills work, just not the other way around... I was on Wellbutrin and paxil along with the nuva ring and had no problems at all... TOTALLY LOVED IT!! =) so just talk to your Dr. sweety! Hope you get to feelin better!!
Birth control pills can make you feel depressed especially if you have a history of depression. What should you do? First, you need to call your doctor and tell her what's going on. You may need to change your meds, brand or dosage wise. It can take about 3 months to adjust to birth control pills. If you don't start feeling better, you might need to switch brands of pills. The dosage of ortho-cyclen may be too high or the progesterone maybe the wrong kind for you. Unfortunately, birth control pills can sometimes be a guessing game much like finding the right medications for your depression.
