My friend can't stop, its like an addiction. His poor dog has a half dozen scabs he cant stop picking at.

Answer:

Poor puppy...

Sick friend....

That's ANIMAL ABUSE

thats a little scary. I would ask web md they might have it
Sounds like a form of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. He needs to see his doctor & the dog needs to see the vet. Hurry!
i think he needs to get rid of the poor dog or pick his own scabs.. poor little doggy.
It sounds like Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, or possibly an Impulse Control Disorder. Either way, your friend needs professional help. This behavior is dangerous for both your friend's health and the dog's health and well-being. I would strongly suggest that your friend see a psychologist. Good luck!
He should be able to control himself enough to not harm his dog like that.

If he can't stop, he'll have to give the dog to someone who can look after it properly.

oh that doesn't sound right. i've heard that mutilating and harming small animals is a precursor to doing harmful things to people. i mean, think about it, surely this poor dog winces in pain when this guy picks on his skin... if he enjoys inflicting pain on an animal i wonder how he relates to people!
