Is the suicide rate higher for people that are unemployed than those who are employed
Apparently it is.
This article from a Danish study indicated that not being fully employed is associated with a twofold to threefold increased relative risk of death by suicide, compared with being fully employed. http://jech.bmj.com/cgi/content/full/59/...
This study from Italy reported that suicide rates among the unemployed are clearly and constantly higher than those among the employed: up to three times higher among men, and twice as high among women. http://jech.bmj.com/cgi/content/abstract...
This from a US talk show host's show reports that there are many risk factors for suicide, including substance abuse and mental illness, but the two situations in which men are most likely to kill themselves are after the loss of a job, and after a divorce. http://www.glennsacks.com/distraught_fat...
I googled this and got lots of hits. Many were outside the US, probably only because there were studies done there, and not so many in the US... or because I just didn't locate the US studies.
Yes in developing countries and especially where there is more of population explosion.
ill let you know when i lose my job!!
I think it depends on the person and on the job. A lot of high-stress jobs see a higher rate of suicide.
However, people with no job for any length of time tend to lose their self-worth and value their lives less and less as they feel that they are contributing nothing.
I don't have any specifics or statistics to back this up, but if you did some research I'm sure you could find solid numbers.
