Is lithium addictive
It has been known to be used for recreation, but it falls under the class of drugs called anti depressants, If taken for long periods of time you will become dependant and get withdrawls if ceased suddenly. But not addictive in the same sense as valium , xanax, temazepam (Benzo's) and opiate based pain killers like morphine, oxy contin, vicodin because these drugs release an almost instant euphoria or pleasurable calming effect. Hope that makes sense
No, but anyone that is on it better have their blood levels checked, and often. A high level will over time ruin the kidneys and can bring kidney failure.
Not exactly, but it can cause you to have really severe "discontinuation syndrome" which is similar to addiction. If you take it for a while then stop abruptly, you can have a really bad manic or psychotic episode in response to stopping.
One of my family members who worked at a school knew this kid with unipolar depression who was put on lithium and had to be taken off due to toxic liver levels. When they stopped it, he had a psychotic episode even though he never had before going on it. They had to put him back on and taper him off.
