Is it possible for someone with a dirty past to change

My husband has 3 felonies for drug possession and was a heroin addict for 4 years. He sought treatment and help and has been off heroin for 5 years now. I met him 9 months ago and we just got married 2 weeks ago. I love him very much and I think it took courage to change. Has anyone here on ByeDR.com been a drug addict and turned their life around?

Answer:

I've never been an addict, but I have had experience with some. It is possible for "some" people to change. I've seen it happen. However, when a person gives up that type of lifestyle, they need a strong, positive influence to keep them from backsliding. My best advice to you is to keep your man involved and busy. Also reassure him of your love and support. Good luck.

i know people who have. so yes it is possible. if they really want to change they can change but they have to want to. just remember nothing is impossible. good luck to you
Anyone can change. For some, the change process will be much harder as old patterns, old addictions can be difficult to overcome. But with enough will power, support from loved ones, anyone can change.

That is why so many millions of dollars are spent on advertising. They are expecting that you will "change" and buy their product.

I was addicted to cocaine and I disconnected myself from it, by myself and I'm so much happier because of it. I know now that I would lose everything if I went back to it.. if you have any doubt in him, let him know that if you ever have reason to suspect drug use, that you will do what you deem necessary
I think that it is possible for people in your husbands situation to change but you have to be aware that relapse just may very well happen. If he himself stopped using because he wanted to - not because he was arrested or because someone forced him to change - the chance he will be successful is much greater. So, I would say that his reason for getting clean is very important - that, along with his involvement with his treatment program - meetings, church, support groups, etc.
