Answer:

Alright this is just stupid. NO - You can not be bipolar if you have never had a manic/hypomanic episode. The name itself states that. BI (means 2) and POLAR (means opposite ends or whatever) so yeah, you have to have one extreme AND the other extreme so that it = 2. What's wrong with you people that don't get this? <And that is not to the asker but is to the idiots that answered it yes.>

So, if you are so inclined to diagnose someone or be diagnosed with a 'polar' disorder based on the above ideas, you could choose to say that the person is UNIPOLAR (yep, one). A Unipolar disorder is based on the concept of comparing 'clinical depression <aka major depressive disorder>' with bipolar disorder.

To clarify, unipolar disorder, or clinical depression, or major depressive disorder is characterized by a state of intense sadness, meloncholy, or despair that is beyond disruptive to an individual in aspects of their life. These aspects involve their social functioning and/or the activities of every day living.

No, that person would be depressed if they dont fluctuate between depression & elation.
so they've never been manic? but they're depressed? I need more information...why is bipolar suspected?
Yes. There are levels to bipolar but, I will not go into great in depth detail on that. In short I believe bipolar is a consequence of life. Life stinks.
No. You have to have both Manic and Depressive symptoms even though the severity differs.
yes it is very possible to be bipolar, if a person never had a hypomanic or manic episode. sometimes, a bipolar can have more depressive episodes and is more often. biopolar can often be misdiagnosed as depressive disorder because no manic or hypomanic episodes occur. It is rare.
yea. jus cuz theyve never had that doesnt mean theyre bipolar. it has to do with how bipolar they are and depression has nothing to do with being bipolar.
You only have to have one episode of mania to be bipolar. Maybe you have had some mania and didn't realize it. I had explained to my doctor how well I felt, and he realized I was manic at the time. I just thought I was feeling reeeally good.
What makes u think Bi-polar is the problem one definition of it is being from one extrem to another, meaning either extremely depressed at the bottom of the pole or extremely manic on top of the pole . U will be really moody during this , racing thoughts ect. the best way to find out is to go get help and there is no shame in be Bi-polar there were really smart people there were, because there minds are very creative .
As a girl with bipolar disorder, I can tell you that yes, absolutly. You have all the symptoms of the depression, but none of the mania.
