I say this as I have a history of depression and eatind disorders. Eating disorders like depression is supposed to be heriditary. My sister does not have either depression or eaing disorders. But both my grand mother on my fathers side and my great grandmother on my mothers side have eating disorders. My sister though grew up in the sma home as I did, spent far less time at home- infact was rarely not out with friends. I did not, I lived at home, and spent most of my childhood appeasing my father by following his rules including his wierd eating patterns, though he doesnt have an eating disorder, he does not eat normally. He was very strict and demanding, I took on these values and do beleve this to be a major contributer to myy depression.

Yes it can.. but although you may be genetically predisposed to depression I think environmental factors are also a big part of it all.

If there is a history of depression in you family you have an increased risk of having depression than someone who has no family history.

When it comes to bipolar depression you have an increased risk of 20%. With unipolar depression (where you don't get the manic episodes, just the low moods) you also have an increased risk, i know that it's less than 20% increased risk but i'm not sure what the exact figure is.

There are many views of where depression comes from but the main models are medical (eg genetic, neurochemistry), psychoanalitic (eg loss of a loved one), behavioural (reaction to negative life events) and cognitive (negative self-judgement)

if it runs in the family you've a good chance of having it though you can have it also from physical imbalances etc.
