In your place I would go and have a complete physical checkup with a general physician, or your family doctor if you have one; and also go back and have a good heart to heart chat with your psychiatrist, or whoever has been handling your emotional problems. Just sit down and talk it out. Go armed with a complete list of any questions you want to raise, any fears you may have, and if there is any part of your body that you specifically believe isn't working the way it should, direct your physician's attention to that, and discuss your symptoms.

Remember, no matter how good a doctor is, he can't read your mind, and unless you speak up, he isn't going to be in a position to give you the complete benefit of his special expertise.

In response to the title question, depression can have physical symptoms such as fatigue or body aches. It may also be considered a "disease" because sufferers share a group of symptoms, it may be fatal (if symptoms lead someone to suicide), has been shown to affect both physical and mental health and responds to drug treatments.

Everyone feels sad or unmotivated when bad things happen. The difference with depression is that the feelings last more than a few days and interfere with you living a normal life.

What's important to note now is that you are making improvement. Treating depression is an imperfect science and it may take several tries to find what works for you. A recent study showed that the majority of sufferers could be cured of depression--but that most had to adjust their medication and therapy a few times before they found the right combination for them.

The take-away? Keep working with your therapist, pay attention to what works and stick it out. Good luck!
