Is body odour caused by ocd

health advisory Hospital Mental Health 2007-11-15 19:01:44

When my daughter was 8 years old kids told her she was smelling. She is now 32 years old and still obsesses over the thought that she is smelling. She now says her body actually produces smells when she is around other people. I am extremely sad and dont know how to help her. Is this OCD? Does anyone know of any alternative treatment?. Thank you

Answer:

No, but she could well be obsession about body odour due to OCD, she needs at the very least an assessment appointment with a therapist

OCD produces obsession about cleanliness.

OCD causes increased perception of body odour.

Treat the OCD and her worry of body odour will go lessen.

Don't be sad. It's actually rather funny how Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder works. I has diagnosed with it years ago. She does not smell. She still thinks she does but she doesn't. I've said the same thing over and over on this board because it has worked so well for me... meds. Celexa 10mg 3-5 times a week before bed. Her psychiatrist (and if she doesn't have one she should get one) will perscribe what he thinks best. You need to learn to look at it with some humor - even though she is in a lot of pain (from worry/anxiety) it is an extreme amplification of a fear she has. It has nothing to do with how she really smells - it's a nagging feeling that she smells bad. If she sees your humor- she will probably start to see the humor in it as well (after a while). Best of Luck!
