If you are attending a function that is for a particular group, and/or a particular interest, you could 'bone up' on their interest prior to attending.

People who don't respnd to my comments, and/or questions, I just excuse myself from. I understand totally your feelings. You don't have to attend functions in which you know you'll be uncomfortable. You would likely be more comfortable at small gatherings than in huge ones.

I think you do have many strengths, and difficulty in making small talk indicated a degree of intellect as well.

I'd urge you not to beat yourself up about it,but if you do want to improve in that area, please do try reading the book I suggested. Attend functions, and/or be with people with whom you have the same interest(s).

If you were passionate about making small talk, I'd think there WAS a problem. It's akin to attending a cocktail party without a cocktail. lol

Please focus on your strenghts, not on whqt you consider weaknesses.

I am really introverted, but I am still happy. I think you can only be classified as one or the other if you are happy being that way. I like being a loner, it keeps me sane. I hate a lot of people, so it keeps me from beating people up, too. You are right, though, there is no point to the strengths if you are unhappy inside. Why don't you just try being extroverted until you can't, and then be introverted again. Switch between them and see if it makes you happier.
