Intermittent Explosive Disorder

health advisory Hospital Mental Health 2007-11-15 19:01:16

My best friend is a male living with two other males in a sort of bachelor pad. One of the guys he lives with has Intermittent Explosive Disorder and he has these very scary outbursts where he screams and breaks things. The guys all say not to worry, because they know how to handle him and I trust them, I know nothing bad would happen to me, but it scares me. Typically what will set this guy off is seeing me and my bestfriend hang out, he gets angry at any intimacy or closeness between a male and a female, because he doesn't have that right now. He tends to explode on my bestfriend more than anyone else, for any reason real or imagined. He also seems to get angry if the guys pay more attention to anyone else other than him, unfortunately I seem to cause that a lot. I'm trying to do whatever I can not to trigger an attack, but sometimes just my presence is enough to set him off. What would you advise that I could do to prevent any more attacks from being aimed at me?

Answer:

This must be very difficult for everyone involved. I would suggest that you find out as much as you can about this disorder so that you can be more aware of what is happening, and so that you can protect yourself and your friends if necessary. Check out the following reliable sources, to start:
