Improving self image/self-esteem

I feel like I need to improve my self image a bit or how I feel about myself, I should say.

I know that I should not be feeling insecure about my image. I've always felt extremely secure with myself. I'm pleased with my personality, I'm doing well in school, have a great job, friends, family, etc....I'm a healthy weight and consider myself to be attractive but for some reason, I'm feeling very insecure about myself.

When at work or at home, I'm fine. But in social situations, I'm constantly feeling as if people are looking at me, noticing my every flaw. It makes me really uncomfortable to the point where I'd rather avoid "going out" so that I can avoid people and lounge in sweat pants. I'm even feeling insecure around my boyfriend, who I know loves me for much more than what I look like.

I dont consider myself a vain person, nor am I obsessed with appearance. I'm very laidback and casual, but unsure what happened to cause me to feel this way. What are some ways in improving this?

Moderate exercise may help get the endorphins and serotonin going, helping your mood to improve. Other helpful techniques may include "mindfulness-based stress reduction," and they offer those classes in a lot of places. There are a lot of books you can purchase that help teach you techniques to counteract some of those annoying thoughts (Hayes, "Get Out Of Your Mind & Into Your Life") but should be used only as a supplement. If you haven't done so please visit a therapist (preferably one who does cognitive-behavioral therapy, or CBT). Maybe you may need anxiety medication or something, but I can't make that determination; only your therapist can. Maybe something else is going on that a therapist can unearth.
