Im unmotivated, what can I do

health advisory Hospital Mental Health 2007-11-15 19:01:35

My father passed away in November and since then I've been very unmotivated. I'm a graduate student, who needs to study at least 5-6 hours a day. But today for example, all I did is watch tv, even though I knew that I have a huge test on Thursday. Are there any suggestions to help me? I see a counselor once weekly, but am also afraid to try some anti-depressants. After learning some of the side effects and the science behind them, I'm scared to do so.

I don't have many objective people to turn to, and my mother passed away three years ago. So I don't have her either.

Any true suggestions? I'm a very smart cookie, and love the work I am doing. But how can I get out of this funk?

Thanks for everyone's help.

Answer:

Consider the likelihood that your depression is temporary. You must get medication and take it as a temporary way of coping with depression -- which will eventually ease. The most important thing you have to do is to succeed in graduate school. That's what your mother and father would have wanted. It's hard and expensive to get another chance in graduate school. You have to pull yourself together and finish with grades that a smart cookie deserves. My father died while I was in graduate school and it hurt my grades. I could've used this advice.
