Well, my mom is kinda nuts because of the way her parents treated her and because she had barin surgery.. soo it really depends on there before life and what happend then. If you have a good life now then you will prolly be a happen person later.

if you actually mean clinical insanity, then chances are pretty good it will be passed on to your kids. mental illness, even as simple as depression, is usually genetic. Whole entire families are usually on antidepressants while whole other families can't even conceive of what it would be like to be depressed for no reason.

you can't really "catch" mental illness just by proximity, but being around insane people can sometimes make you feel insane yourself...

Hmm. You would have to define insane. There has been shown to be a genetic link to schizophrenia and I think to bipolar disorder along with quite a few others. I don't think it's a reason to not have a child. It is likely your child won't "catch"--for lack of a better term...and no, its not contagious-- the parents insanity. The possibility is there (genetic predisposition), but for most mental diseases or disorders probably the offspring will be ok.

my mother had mental problems, i seem to be fine or at least i think so lol however my sister deals with depression and so does a cousin of mine. it is hereditary but if you are that conserned you should ask your doctor. just give you kids the best childhood that you can and pray for the best. i worry about my children sometimes, but i think my moms problems had alot to do with her childhood.

I was adopted but growing up I watched my mom beat her head against the wall. As a young adult I would burn and cut myself. I was told it was a learned behavior by my therapist. I am fine now and my kids have never seen a thing. Get help and stop it now. Your children see your reactions to life and they learn curtain things from you. As for a chemical imbalance you need to talk with your doctor about the possibility of you passing it on and just keep an eye on your children's behavior.

Go to the NAMI (National Alliance for Mental Health) website to find out which kinds of mental illnesses are genetic (passed on to children) and which are not. Even if a mental illness is genetic, that does not necessarily mean your child will have it. If the gene is recessive he won't have it. And you don't "catch" any mental illness. It is not a germ. It is a biochemical imbalance in the brain and can be mostly corrected with the right medications, just as a diabetic's insulin/sugar balance can be mostly coreected with the right medications. More often than not it is a something that can be passed on genetically and is not a learned behavior. It also is something the person affected cannot help, and it needs to be corrected with medications. That is not to say that people can't exhibit irrational behavior without being "insane" or have a mental illness. Go to the NAMI health site to what the symptoms of mental illness are.
