If I take more psychiatric medicine than prescribed, will that harm me

I take Klonopin as a PRN-as needed, & it's only 0.5 mg, & it doesn't do me any good. So if I take 2 pills, which is 1 mg, would that be an overdose? Would it harm me?

Answer:

You're getting tolerance to that medication. Let your doctor know about that. The trouble with anyone giving advice on here is we're not experts, and you probably are taking other meds, too, so it could interact. So call up your doc and ask! (of course, then you need to sit by the phone all afternoon and wait for them to call back.. . .)

I had a lot of out of control behavior when I was on benzos (klonopin is a benzo). Make sure you aren't getting behavioral side-effects when you're coming off the klonopin, like getting angry or more likely to harm yourself. I had trouble with other drugs too, like benadryl, risperdal, etc. Took me years to figure this out.

Taking more medication than prescribed is always dangerous. If your medication isn't helping talk with the doctor that prescribed it and he should make the change.
Probably not.....98% of people who take that are using it as nothing more than a crutch and excuse anyway.
It's never a good idea to take more medicine than you are prescribed. It might do no harm at all, but you never know what damage it can do. Why don't you go your doctor and tell him/her than 0.5mg has not been effective? That way s/he can either up the dosage or can recommend something else that might be more effective.
You know the answer to that. Only a doctor can prescribe or change your medication. You take things into your own hands just say hi to Anna Nicole when you get there.
ask your doctor first. they'll know what to do. tell him the medicine doesn't work. maybe its the wrong one. so if u take 2 pills and its the wrong medication given to you, u'll be in more harm than just taking 1 pill. = )
You say your medication as prescribed is PRN. I know many people/peers with mental illness who have a similar PRN. I am not a professional doctor but just by the PRN designation means you take it as needed. Please, consult your psychiatrist re: this because you are taking 50 % more on a regular basis to control symptoms. With my psychiatrist I call or schedule an appointment explain that the dosage isn't addressing my symptoms. I tell you, to call your own psychiatrist, instead of finding out if this is an overdose or would harm you. Because, individual factors are involved. Re: your body-weight, hx of reactions to meds, other psychological or medical conditions. Don't hesitate to call your psychiatrist because your med is PRN so you did what is an acceptable parameter re: way it was prescribed. He/She is not going to think you did anything to intentionally harm yourself. You were following directions. Hope this helps.
