I need advice about returning to work after two years unemployment due mental health problems
For the past two years I have suffered from very severe depression, and have not worked for nearly 2 years.
I left my job due to illness. I am feeling better now and would like to return to employment. However I don't know where to start! I am worried about employers will say because of the 'stigma' I don't want to work in my previous career (social care) as I don't think I would able to cope with the stress.
I have no other significant work experience and post 18 qualifications in any other field.
I also only want to work part time (flexible hours) due to my health.
What should I do? Thank you
(BTW I'm UK based)
Answer:My dear, depression is the world's pandemia and at about 20% of all sufferers experienced acute phases or severe depression.
You need to start with positive approach toward YOU, toward your qualities and skills. Of course, you are going to regain maybe step by step your awareness. Do not think at all about the ignorance of people, who dare to accept depressive period ( though a long one) as a "stigma".
Now of vital importance is not to focus on the job, which you'll perform, but with you, as the stress could cause you additional insecurity, anxiety and tension.
Try to get a job, with less tension and as you mentioned to work part time ( flexible hours). Never ever forget that you are not alone and we have one life..BE yourself, Be brave!!
