I have recently been diagnosed w/ bipolar, how can I get more support from family and friends
My husband is being very supportive, but my family and friends who I have told are being critical of my doctors choice to give me medication (which I think is going to help). I have not been able to control my moods and the other effects of bipolar and I am glad I am finally going to have help. Despite how I have tried to explain my reasons for getting medical help, they do not seem supportive. They try to tell me that I am fine, but I have never felt "fine." After years of being told it is only anxiety or depression, (I am normally happy, not sad) I have finally found a doctor that has done a very thorough examination of how I feel mentally and physically and I trust his medical opinion. How do I get them to stop criticizing my decision?
Answer:Take your meds first off. Once those start to kick in people will understand that you actually have a problem. (They will be able to see the difference in you) But all in all you need not care what others think, yes support would be great, we could all use it, but if you have a problem your only concern should be getting help and getting better. Don't waste your time trying to make others understand. Just lean on your husband, if the rest can't support you then forget them.
Give them some time to adjust. Also, this shouldn't be the thing that defines you anyway. People are just naturally doing what people do, assuming that if you look and sound fine that there is nothing wrong. Obviously you have just caught them off guard. If the meds help you, then they should support that.
Find your local NAMI chapter - get your family and friends to attend or provide them with educational material. Often friends and family don't understand disorders or are uncomfortable - it is important they understand this is a medical condition. And if they won't go with you - go yourself NAMI is a wonderful resource for you!
