I have an over active imagination Im afraid of the dark and monsters

I don't even know what to do. It's so bad sometimes at night I even have to get my boyfriend to walk me to the bathroom and wait outside the door while I use the toilet or if I have the courage to go alone, my heart races and I start thinking about monsters and being swallowed up by the dark and that I'll disappear into some mirrored reality. I mean, obviously, that's just my imagination, but that doesn't mean it's easy to calm down! It's worse at night, but even sometimes during the day I think about monsters and have to continuously tell myself, "it's just my imagination, it's just my imagination." Sometimes I even have to ask anothers opinion on reality! What can I do on my own to get over this? Most nights, I feel like I'm 6 years old.

Answer:

Esoterik is right - you must face these things. You must first know that they cannot hurt you, which is true, and then go looking for them. Seek them out in your dreams, hunt them down, and then make them so small that they are afraid of you. Be as mad at them as you can. Shout and scream at them as you would a stray dog piddling on your leg. Believe me, I've had to do this myself, and it really, really works. You'll be surprised how much this empowers you, and frees you from fear. Don't be afraid of your imagination, all the world's best artists, in any field, have this gift. You are obviously one of them.

the best way to conquer your fears is to meet them face to face. all u have to do is find the courage inside of you to do that. once that's done, you'll realize how silly you were before.
Keep a bright fluorescent lantern at your bedside, maybe 2 ( from camping supply stores, KMart, etc.) See a doctor and ask to be referred for counselling, or you would probably be a good hypnotherapy candidate. This might sound silly, but keep a child's raygun in one hand, the bigger the better, and preferably one that makes noise and lights up (try it first), then your subconscious mind will know that you can defend yourself against any possible monsters. Avoid any of those types of movies or books.
I too am scared of the dark and i am 30 years old. try to pay attention to what you are watching on tv. I f it is scary then don't watch it. I sleep with a night light on. I also sleep with a fan on. that drowns out any noise that can disturb me. Maybe talk to a dr to see if it is something deeper than just an overactive imagination too. hope this helps
