Answer:
Fewer reps with heavier weight increases muscle mass. But BE CARFUL to not injure youself.
What happens is by using a heavier weight you in essence destroy the muscle and then it rebuilds itself bigger. Hence increased muscle mass. That is why a day of rest between weightlifing is important and you want to rotate, arm & torso, legs & back.
A personal trainer to help get you going would be a good idea, and help you not get injured.
It doesn't matter, as long as you work your muscles more each time, whether by adding a little bit more weight or by keeping the same weight as last time, but doing a few more reps. In either case, you are working your muscles more. You could do 500 reps at 10 lb. dumbells, that would overload your muscles, but it would take a really long time! Do whatever you feel better at, I switch it up, if I feel I'm not ready to handle the next heavier weight, I'll stick to the same wieght, but do more reps.
Go heavy with low reps. (4-7) Warm up first so you won't permanently damage them.
More reps with lower weights tones the muscles. Fewer reps with more weight increases muscle mass.
It will up to about 8-10 reps. But after that your developing more muscular endurance rather than muscular strength or hypertrophy - which is the real word for muscles getting bigger.
