its the discharge of static electricity, try wearing a diferent pair of shoes/ traiers. i used to get that alot and i noticed it was only when i was earing a certain pair of shoes, i thik the rubbr/plastic soles on then had something to do with it, try it

Your clothing rubbing against your skin/hair builds up a slight static charge, and when your fingertips get close to metal, the electricity will want to ground itself- so will jump to the metal, giving you a slight jolt.

You could be dragging your feet a bit when you walk and when you touch metal you get shocked. It happens to me lots, even when I press the button to call the elevator. I have yet to figure out how to stop it so I've just gotten used to the shocks every now and then.

It is winter, which means very dry air - which helps build up static electricity. Check your shoes/clothing - some man-made materials generate/conduct static more than others.

(By the way, I lived in two places growing up - Arizona and Florida. In AZ, my brother and I would drag our feet down the hallway with our shoes on and touch doorknobs in order to see the static. We tried this when we moved to FL, and it didn't work - the air was too humid to build up enough static!)

I get it from shopping trolleys too!

If the shocks bother you, what I do is hold my car keys in my hand and touch the door knob or the elevator button with the key. The electric charge is grounded through the key, not my finger and I don't get the shock.
