When putting in a rod in lower leg for tibia/ fibula fracture, do they use CIC or indwelling cathete

Since the operation is not very long, is it necessary to put in an indwelling catheter? Why can't patients be given a CIC later? Can the CIC be given by patients attendant?

How long is the patient unable to feel the need to urinate after the operation? Is catheterisation required at all in such cases?

Answer:

1. yes the operation is not very long, nevertheless your doctor can never be certain of the actual time that the operation will last. Being an orthopedic surgeon myself, I can assure you that the last thing your doctor wants is to stop the operation in order to put a catheter.

2. the anesthesiologist need to know the exact amount of urine you pass in order to be certain that his job is done properly

3. if your anesthesiologist decides to use spinal anesthesia, then you will not be able to pass urine until your anesthesia is gone (usually several hours later, 3-4 hrs usually) therefore you will need again a catheter

4. the catheter is usually placed when the anesthesia has been completed, therefore you don't understand anything.

...so relax, let your doctors do their work and most of all...good luck with your operation

Well do you want to pee yourself during the operation I think NOT, and they also don't want you peeing on them either, just get the catheter and be done with it.

Good Luck = )
