There is no generic form of Propecia (finasteride). You meant Proscar, which is identical. Propecia is 1 mg for each tablet, Proscar is 5 mg.

Proscar is for (benign) enlarged prostate. Propecia is for male-pattern baldness.

Any pharmacy has generic Proscar now. At Costco (http://www.costco.com), it's $58.69 for 30 tablets. You can cut it in four (it's impossible to cut in five)--and you'll get 1.25 for each dose, and it's about $0.48 for dose.

I assume that you are trying to get Propecia / Proscar without a prescription. You need to see your doctor. He might be able to give you samples of Propecia. There are seven tablets in each box. Unfortunately it takes a while to see if it works-so a box or two may not do much. Merck used to sample Proscar, but I guess they caught on.

You can always ask your doctor to write you a prescription for Proscar (5 mg) and ask him to write it as "use as directed"--and your insurance may pay for it (minus the co-pay). Get it filled at the 30th day (and yet, each "month" supply lasts you four months). That's how it's done.

It is in your doctor's interest to try to save you money when you may have to pay for exact medication. So if he refuses to write Proscar instead of Propecia--go to someone else.

Don't get it via some shabby website. They may charge you so much more than you'd normally have to pay for on your own. Go to a real physician, your family doctor, or a dermatologist.

And do consider the pro and con of this medication, too. I am sure you have already looked that up.

I haven't tried Propecia but I have used many other generic drugs from this pharmacy.
