I was hoping someone could help me. I wanted to ask some questions if you didnt mind. I need to chat with someone. You can only get herpes in your mucous membrane areas right? Meaning gentitals mounth eyes nose etc.... I was worried about shedding. If you dont have any syptoms or they have passed. Can you pass it by hugging , shaking hands ,a kiss . Assuming you have no sores in your mouth. Thats another question if you have gential herpes is that diffeent from oral herpes ? You have one or the other? I have gentital. Can you confirm. I am sad because I dont know how to deal with my kids. Im afraid to be near them. I clean eveyting I touch and wash all my clothes as soon as i take them off. Am I over reacting? will this get better mentally. Its been a week and I cant sleep. I am hoping its just really dramatic in the beginning and then you get used to it or its not as big as it seems. It's just that they is no cure and that seems forever. THanks

Answer:

Not as far as i know. Go to www.emedicine.com

they have lots of good resources to read up on. We went through the same worry when my great grandmother had shingles(another type of herpes). It was rumored back then that changing our diapers could give it to us. Turned out to be wrong. So you should rely on good medical sources and don't be afraid to speak to your doctor(whom should have told you what you needed to know).

You can pass the virus through mucous membranes, and through minor abrasions of the skin. The virus settles in a nerve - it doesn't mind which one - and that can be anywhere on the face, neck, or genital region. However, it is possible for it to spread to other areas of the body, particularly if the person has any kind of skin condition - very dry skin, eczema, or other dermatitis.

You can pass the virus at any time, but it is most likely just before, during, and after an attack. You can limit this risk by taking a daily dose of acyclovir as a prophylactic.

Although there are two viruses involved in cold sores on the face, and herpes in the genital area, each virus will live in the other area - so you can cross contaminate between the two locations with either virus.

Generally, once someone is infected in one area with one of these two strains, they don't develop infections from the strain in other areas. So if you have cold sores, you are unlikely to get genital infections from the same virus strain - though you may become infected with the other strain.
