That is why people who originally come from areas with high instances of malaria are far more likely to carry the sickle cell gene (their ancestors survived better if they were carriers). It is likely that some people have random mutations that would give them enough protection against the virus to survive. So even in a worst case scenario - if the flu does mutate, no, not all humans would die.
