One is metallic mercury which is commonly called quick silver. you will not die if you swallow a little bid. the second is mercury ion with +2 charges. This is the one that is very poisonous. the mercury ion exists in mercury compounds, such as mercuric chloride, mercuric oxide, etc. it affects human brain profoundly, especially young babies.

Mercury, Lead, and cyanide interrupt this transport chain before it can go to completion and make the energy. Death will eventually insue if left untreated for a period of weeks to months.

Now Mercury in large amounts could produce a quicker death in one of two ways, either by stopping more electron tranport chains or because Mercury is so thick it could clog your windpipe and keep you from getting air.
