Because autism spectrum disorders, such as those that involve savants, are thought to be sex-linked, that is carried on the X chromosome. If a male (XY chromosomes) gets an affected gene from his mother, the X chromosome remains active and he will be affected by whatever condition he has inherited. If a female (XX chromosomes) gets an affected gene, half of the X chromosomes get shut down (lionisation), so she will not be affected to the same degree, perhaps only to a mild or unnoticable level.
