Assuming you're in the US, and me being in Canada.. I'm gonna tell you that there IS border patrol at the border. Where I live, there are 2 border crossings from New Brunswick to Maine, and for all of New Brunswick I think there are 3. The US/Canada Border is HUGE and there aren't enough people to properly defend it by half. It just so happens that where I live there's a river that separates us.

But I know that if I go 5 miles up the river, I can take my canoe and go to America undetected. there's no way to patrol the whole border. They do the best they can. There are only so many international airports however.. and you can hire border patrol there. It's an unstated border. You're getting on a plane and crossing a border somewhere if you're flying internationally, and they must have the same precautions.
