Blood pressure? You sure you dont mean for temperature? Ive never seen mercury used for blood pressure. Blood pressure is done using a cuff around the arm and tightening and then loosening it till you hear blood "swoosh" in the vein of an arm. You hear the "swoosh" using a stethoscope. Mercury is commonly used in thermometers.

because it has a low boiling point !!
Mercury is not a common method of measuring pressure at all today. It used to be a very common method of measuring pressure, because it is 13 times as dense as water, therefore, for a given set of pressure parameters you will need a column 1/13th as high.

Hence, weather/wo/men will still say ??.?? inches of mercury. S/He could also say ??.?? feet of water, or they could also say ? Pascals, or ?.?? Kilo-pascals, or ?? Millibars. They could also go PSI like we do when we fill our tires, or any other force/area. Sorry I got off on a tangent.

When somebody says inches (or millimeters or any other distance) of mercury they are saying the height that a column of mercury would need to be to equal the force of a given pressure. Today that doesn't mean they are in fact using mercury, but in the old days they would have been. Mercury is still sometimes used today.

For temperature bec of the low Boiling Pt. For Blood Pressure in a Sphygmomanometer bec of the density. Sphygmomanometer is the swoosh thing in the second answer( please tell that guy to stop being an insult to us biologists). Backgrnd. information Sphygmomanometers are rapidly going outta use for the more conveninet digital bp meters.
