Immediately after hard work (like running) the breath is very very deep, so You can inhale water.

If Your breath is OK, cold water can make Your heart slow down or even stop, because of coldness.

At last, You can swallow very large amount of water, which can't pass through the diaphragm hole to the stomach, and a sharp pain in Your chest can occur, which is happening because of expansion of the passage. That expansion can rupture the diaphragm or the passage.

Anyway, it is adviced to drink water before running, but if You have to take some water after running, take it in small swallows, with pauses between, and make sure that the water is at the ambient temperature.

Immediately after a running race maximum blood goes into one`s heart and other parts.If water is taken , as a reflex action blood that is needed by heart,lungs and limbs is suddenly diverted to stomach much the same way as food is taken.This causes ACUTE SHORTAGE OF BLOOD SUPPLY TO HEART ie a fatal heart attack is precipitated.We have seen mules in Army dying by taking water immediately after the hardest work.The mule had to be allowed to rest before being watered.
