Answers:

No, you read it right-They used cells that had originally been derived from humans. The research article abstract can be found at www.pumed.com by typing in the first author's name. The reference is:

Transpl Immunol. 2005 Dec;15(2):131-42.

This group put a lot of time into developing these cells so that they might someday be used for treatment in humans in controlled clinical trials. The rat is a typical animal used in testing therapies for the first time. They would not spend a great deal of time, energy, and money developing rat cells of this type, because even if they worked, they could never be used for human injuries. Thus, they spend the majority of time working with human cells for the ultimate payoff, and just use rats as a first testing vehicle to eventually, hopefully, be able to use this in humans with spinal injuries.

I would just like to add ,most human treatments for medications and some human medications come from animals because it is not okay for researchers to do all the things they do to animals to humans and if it were there would not be thousands of volunteers beating on their doors waiting to be a human guinea pigs
