simply because it is a disease of tropical Africa and New Guinea.
No use of making more queries. There are so many things for scientists to do !!
mononucleosis is rare in the UK and even more rare is malaria. malaria. Burkitt's lymphoma is a type of cancer that is associated with the Epstein-Barr virus, also the cause of mononucleosis.Children affected with the disease often also had chronic malaria which is believed to have reduced resistance to the virus.
it is just a strange occcurance that some conditions tend to happen to certain people from certain areas. for instance sickle-cell anemia usually only occurs in african-americans there are a host of others.
There are three clinical variants of Burkitt lymphoma (BL).
1. Endemic BL - occurs in equatorial Africa and Papua New Guinea, represents the most common childhood maligancy in these regions. These are areas where Ebstein-Barr viral infections are found at a higher rate than Western Europe. Early EBV infection is strongly correlated with BL.
2. Sporadic BL - occurs worldwide, but this is the variant most common in the UK. It accounts for only 1-2% of all lymphomas, but 30-50% of all childhood lymphomas are BL. Again, early EBV infection is correlated with development of BL.
3. Immunodeficiency associated BL
