Does it mean 5 hydrogen and 1 nitrogen?
Answers:Good guess, but I found that H5N1 refers to the subtypes of surface antigens present on the virus with a (H)emagglutinin type 5 and a (N)euraminidase type 1. Hemagglutinin is a protien that helps the virus bind itself to a host.
"The "H" and "N" in the name of a flu virus stand for hemagglutinin and neuraminidase, two proteins on the surface of the virus that allow it to enter and exit host cells."
The bird flue gets its name from the combination of HA and NA proteins
It is the 5th hemagglutinin to be discovered (h5) and the 1st neuraminidase (n1) to be found in that combination.
