An indication of tiredness, stress, over-work or boredom.

An action indicating psychological decompression after a state of high alert.

A means of expressing powerful emotions like anger, rejection or apathy.

You see someone yawning. You hear someone yawning. You read about yawning. You think about yawning.

Now, you want to yawn. If this describes you, then you have just "caught" a yawn. Between 40 and 60% of the population is susceptible to contagious yawns, but the reason why yawns are catching is unknown. Steven Platek, Ph.D. suggests that being aware of one's own mental state ("self-recognition") and the ability to see things from another person's point of view ("mental state attribution") may make people susceptible to contagious yawns.

Ofcourse yawning generally indicates sleepiness or fatigue, but it is believed that yawning is a primal instinct that we have held on to through the centuries. Neanderthal men would yawn to indicate to the tribe that it's time to retire to shelter. They would coordinate thier sleep patterns to keep everyone together.

We have carried that instinct subconciously though years of evolution to still respond to someone else non-verbally telling us it's time to retire.. (zzzz)

Lack of oxygen - physical reaction to tiredness, stress or boredom. Yawning forces a deep breath which helps circulate oxygen in the blood.

It is contagious because - well - monkey see monkey do! Ha ha.

yeah it kind of relates to tiredness, but thats not the cause. its just you breathing slow, not taking in enough oxygen, so its ur body's way to receive mroe oxygen, as for hiccuping, its the opposite, its when ur breathing too fast, not getting carbon dioxide
