A Doctor with his own practice probably has been in the business a while and has a pretty good idea what's going on.
A Doctor that is in a clinic is around other Doctors and can discuss cases with them to get second opinions much more easily.
But he may also be under more pressure to bring in more business/do referrals than a Doctor in private practice.
I like going to one in a group practice because there is always someone to take over when my own doctor is gone. I do not like a practice that shuffles you around to the first available doctor. I want one that knows me well, but I also want to have my foot in the door so I can see one of the other doctors. One of my doctors splits an office, but her side is staffed with a nurse practitioner and a physicians assistant - and I feel confident with that too.
My doctor does home visits rather than works in an office.
The big advantage of going to a doctor with partners is that he/she has consistent coverage during vacations and illnesses. And, if his/her schedule is booked for the day, and you need to be seen right away - you can schedule with a partner.
The hard thing is finding a practice where you like all the partners. But, if you understand that you probably will never find that in a practice, you're much better off.
Someone in private practice has the chance to get to know the patients better.
