The ability to almost unerringly pick tthe gender of your child has existed for about twenty years now. The technology was actually first developed for dairy farmers - such a person naturally wants a lot of female bovines and no male ones! It took almost no adaptation to get it to work on humans.
The current owners of the technology, however, do not want to introduce the possibility of a gender imbalance. For this reason, they only allow parents to use it who already have a child, and then only to produce a child that is against the gender majority. So if you have a boy, you can choose to have a girl, but not another boy. The procedure is very expensive in any case.
It involved dyeing the sperm involved before it fertlizes an egg (perhaps that goes without saying since most cows are impregnated by artificial insemination). Each sperm will have either an X chromosome or a Y one. and the X one (rather obviously) is larger. The dye causes all the DNA to flouresce, and even a small difference in illumination, like that between an X and a Y is picked up by a sensor which then filters the sperm appropriately.
Personally, I don't know how many more children I am going to have. Since there is a substantial possibility I'm only likely to have one more, I can see how tempting it might be to use such technology and make sure I can have a girl instead of another boy. Of course, right now that's the LEAST of my problems - I'll need a woman first! ( :
