All when they are just going to look down there anyway. What's the point ladies?

Answers:

In medical school, they teach this technique specifically. Same thing applies to males changing into a gown, prior to a physical exam. i.e. a DRE.

This guesture of leaving the room is seen as sign of repect for the patient's privacy. Watching someone get undressed serves no medical purpose. Why try to invade that privacy? You want to build a trusting relationship with your patient, that's hard to do if they are wondering why you are sitting there watching them undress.

Actually no. The nurse who escorts you to the room hands you a gown and tells you to change.
Some are uncomfortable as it is with their doctor looking down there, so they make it alittle bit easier by leaving the room instead of staying there and making you more uncomfortable..and it's the nurse not the doctor
I'll give you two guesses as to what they're doing after they've seen you with your pants down, and then they leave for a few minutes. The first guess doesn't count.
The nurse shows you to a room. The point is you are not doing a strip in front of the doctor. Many women see women doctors, not male:)
They don't go stand in the hall popping bubblegum and talking about what happened on Desperate Houswives last night. Nurses and Doctors are very busy people with a million things to do and a million other patients to see besides you. This is why they leave the room.
soon to be md has it right. If you hate the wait, join the crowd. As far as gettin gundressd, it it makes you more comfortable, undress from the waist down. When the exam is over (in my case) I start talking to the nurse b4 the doc has even left the room and whip on my unides and pants doc doesn't even notice, I am fast. Then I am ready to talk about findings without having to wait yet again!!
Good explaination med student! The only thing I would add is that when discussing findings, and the next course of action it also is a good idea to allow the patient to dress first. Nobody wants to hear bad news while they are sitting completely exposed.

And it is not necessarily the nurse who tells you to change. I've often chatted with patients first, then asked them to change.

I would vote for MD Soon's answer.
