Preoperative testing can be done for a variety of reasons. The bottom line is, we want to make sure the patient is in the best possible condition before he is subjected to the stress of surgery.

Abnormalities in BUN, electrolytes or blood count/platelets may indicate further workup before surgery.

Where I work, preoperative testing is guided by the individual patient's age, condition, concurrent medical problems, and medications.

If someone is on diuretics, we would want to check electrolytes to make sure he is not potassium depleted. If he is having major surgery, we need to know a blood count so that we know what the allowable blood loss is before we would consider transfusion.

Some surgeons get a load of tests on every patient so the anesthesiologist doesn't cancel or delay the surgery based on lack of information.

1)You do blood urea and creatinine to assess renal function.The electrolytes like sodium and and potassium also gves an indication of renal function.f renal function is poor anaesthesia and sugery will become life threatening for patient

2)Red blood cell count and hemoglobin are checked to find if person is anemic or not.We have to correct anemia before sugery otherwise surgical blood loss will complicate anemia.

3)white blood cell count is usually done to rule out infection.It's increed in infection.But decreased count means deceased immnity which can delay healing nd predispose to infection

4) Patelet count must be adequate(1.5 to 4.5lakhs/mm3). Decreased platelet count makes it difficult to control bleeding during surgery.Even increased count is harmful as it can pedipose to thrombosis

5) in addition you have to do ECG to rule out heart disorders and pulmonary function tests to ensure that patient's lungs are healthy withstand anaesthesia.
