barium enema is a dye used to coat the colon so the exrays will show everything better
The test is done WITH barium. not FOR barium. You need something to block the xray.
Barium has two properties useful in looking for disease:
- It isn't toxic, nor is it absorbed into the system from the G-I tract. You can have it in your innards and it won't hurt you.
- It has a high atomic number, so is a very effective scatterer and absorber of x-rays. This means that if you have a gutful of barium, any weirdnesses will show up on an x-ray or CAT scan, and the radiologist can figure out what is ailing you.
