so that the patient will be pain-free

duh.

To protect the patient.
To relieve pain of course.
Because it would be a bit of a bloody painful operation without it!!
so they wont feel pain
A general anaesthetic not only blocks the pain during surgery, it also cuts down on the risk of distress and shock by blocking the memory of the event. Plus it helps the surgeon if the patient stays still.
I think its preferable to the more tradiotional methods of a bottle of whisky.

WHAT ON EARTH MADE YOU ASK THAT?

i would not like to think what the pain would be like..i had a c section and they had to give me an epidural to numb my spine,i could not imagine what the pain would be like without it as i cant be knocked out by anaethetic, because of a health problem
If you know what a general an aesthetic is, why would you ask a question with such an obvious answer?
We find that when we wait until AFTER surgery, the patients complain.

Anesthesia allows surgeons to perform surgery on patients without the patient (1) moving, (2) feeling pain, or (3) dying.

Many advances in surgery were not possible until advances in anesthesia occurred. During surgery, there are many stresses on the system, and anesthesia attenuates that.
