Refrigerating acidophilus

They might not be ok, it just depends on the temperature that you kept them in for the 5 days. They are most likely not AS active as they once were, but probably still active.

Another alternative rather than taking the pills, is to buy a product called Bio-K. It's in the organic section of the grocery store (I live in Canada). It's a little pricey, but has 10 times the amount of good bacteria than acidophilus. I use this, and also frequently make smoothies using Kefir. Kefir is more inexpensive, (in the organic section) and works the same way. I just find having to take capsules, I forget so often, it's not worth it for me.
Maintaining the storage temperature at +4 degrees C, reflecting refrigerator conditions, is the most important factor in keeping the probiotic bifidobacteria viable.

Most damaging for probiotic bacteria is storing the products at room temperature, and so keeping the probiotic properly chilled during storage is a key issue for their ability to provide health benefits.
