generic basically means its made by an off-brand company. when a company discovers a new drug, they get a patent for 17 years and only they can make the drug (this is a brand name drug). after the patent expires, anybody can make it (these copycats are "generics"). most of the commonly prescribed antibiotics are now generics (amoxicillin, cephalexin, azithromycin, etc.), but you need a prescription for just about every antibiotic in the US
