I live in Halifax, Nova Scotia if there are laws about this.

And I am on a public sewer system. I dont want to polute the harbour anymore then it already is.

Answer:

I don't know about where you live but here in Australia you can take the unused pills back to the pharmacy and they will dispose of them for you. Perhaps you could ask at your pharmacy and see if the same applies where you are.

Take old medications to your local pharmacy, as the pharmacist can dispose of them properly. (Canadian here)

I never heard of the return to pharmacy idea, but that's a good one. They can also be burned if that's a legal option, or sent to a landfill.

Burning them may not be a wise choice the fumes may be more toxic than the pill itself calling the pharmacy and asking if they dispose of pills is probably you re best bet

Throwing them in the trash is a poor option, because landfills can leech into the ground water. If you have a local poison contol center, call them and ask.

In the US, the city water and the ground water tests positive for traces of dozens of drugs. Kudos to Halifax for taking steps to help slow this.

Well I am in Ca. but I have been told that this will be a law in the states that you must not throw your medications down the toilet as this can pollute the harbors and ocean and kill fish, they recommend disposing of your medicines buried in kitty litter in some container and disposed of in the trash, so teenagers do not get a hold of these medicines as they are abusing them as well as it is poisoning the waters
