If they are currently infected, they usually put you on antibiotics till the infection is gone. THere is some statistical evidence, not heralded by many, that tonsils are part of our immune system defense. But when tonsils are coated with studs
(pus filled plaques) they must be removed for your health. If your doctor won't take them out go see an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist.
My tonsils were so infected that when the doctors thought they were removing my tonsils, they left tonsil tabs to grow back. I get tonsilitis every year. I am too old now to have the operation, so I just must grin and bare it.
Doctors do not routinely take them out any longer because they are there for a reason. They filter bacteria and viruses. But if they are bad and cause problems, they will remove them rather than have you sick all the time from your tonsils.
My daughter was never sick from her tonsils, but they were very enlarged and causing her to have problems breathing. She just had them removed in December and it was awful!!!
They don't take 'em out because they believe that the tonsils are a different version of kidneys and filter out all the baddies

The tonsils contribute somewhat to combat infection in your body. Also, the doctors have certain criteria to determine who are candidates for tonsillectomy or not. If the criteria are not met, then they do not take out the tonsils.
