Why can I sleep during the day but not at night

I live a pretty normal life. Work/school during the day, nothing usually at night. When I am home during the day, I could have no trouble falling asleep if I wanted. I'll be reading on my bed and slowly start to doze off just very peacfully. I never let myself doze though, because that makes it even harder to sleep at night. Well then come night, and I will be in the exact same situation, after near passing out all day, but I can't sleep. Reading doesn't help, no caffeine or cigs all day, and nothing. I'll just lay there awake. Thinking, not thinking, thinking about nothing, meditating. No results. The only thing that works is Rx sleep meds, but I just don't get why I can sleep fine during the day!

From reading your post, It sounds like you may need to get more excercise. Many times people work at a desk during the day, come home tired, but are unable to sleep at night. Try exercising early in the evening before dinner. A walk of several miles, jogging or a bike ride. Avoid alcohol as it can act as a stimulant for some people. Try not to eat any food after 7:00 pm especially sugary or fatty foods. Don't lay in bed until it is time for you to sleep. If you want to read or watch TV, do it in a chair, but not in your bed. Take a warm bath or shower before you go to bed and then do not watch TV when you go to bed. It may take a couple of nights, but I bet you will find that you will sleep better.

Exercise is key to getting a good nights sleep. Remember the days when you were a kid and you played all day and slept like a rock at night? Learn to play like a child again. Shoot hoops, ride a bike, roller-blade or play soccer. If you are unable to do that try swimming at the local Y.
