Which side is healthiest for adults to sleep on -- left, right or are they equally OK

health advisory Hospital Health care 2007-11-14 16:20:13

Wondering if there are more risks or benefits to sleeping on one's left or right side, or if the two sides are equally healthy.

Answer:

Sleeping on the left side is not favoured as the heart would be then under pressure of the right lung, the biggest of the two lungs.

Sleeping on the right side is the correct position as the left lung is smaller and the pressure on the heart would therefore be less.

Take care.

Hi there sweetcity....I like your website by the way.

if you are pregnant, the left side is better
either or, but make sure to use a pillow between your legs, to make your hips and back level.
sleeping with ur back against the bed is the best i think.
I have hear whatever side you sleep on will inhibit growth of the body on whatever side you are lying on. I dont remeber the source but I'm sure its true. As far as sides being equally ok the only health problem I would know of is sleeping on your back while sick. If sleeping in a flat position you will increase sinus drainage wich leads to sore throats. Also depending on the persons back problems, pillows between knees and under the belly can help with this. But as far as general health I would think there is no difference between them

If you have a good enough bed it doesn't matter

They say if you have any heart problems, you should sleep on your right side more then your left.
left is better if you suffer from acid reflux.....keeps acid from going back into the esophagus
It can depend on preexisting conditions a person has. For reflux, try to stay off the left side. This position puts pressure on the stomach and may promote refluxing. But elevating the head does more for preventing reflux than which side you sleep on. That thing about avoiding the left side with a bad heart -- that's an old husband's tale. It makes no difference. With a normal pregnancy it won't matter. You will grow no matter which side you sleep on. The idea that growth is inhibited is ridiculous. If the adult has no conditions to be considered, it doesn't matter. You are going to reposition yourself more than a dozen times during the night anyway.
