i went to the dr to last week and had an upper GI, i got my results back and the seen that i had a hurnia.... could it be from lifting heavy things?????

Answer:

If it took an Upper GI to find this hernia then I suspect you were told that you have a hiatal hernia.

Hernias come from a weak spot in the muscle that is suppose to support your anatomy.

Generally speaking there is a defect in the area of your esophogus that controls your esophogus. You probably have fluid coming back up in your chest area and or mouth and this hiatal hernia is allowing this.

Before surgery is generally done to correct this there are other options you can try.

Elevate the head of your bed with blocks that elevate your bed atleast 45 degrees.

Try eating less spicy foods, more frequent light meals and don't eat or drink anything 2-3 hours before going to bed.

Alot of times,a person who drinks too much will be found to have hiatial hernias so if you drink it is recommended that you quit drinking. Alcohol of any kind be it even just beer or wine can aggravate this situation and can lead to severe acid reflux that can permanently damage your esphogus and could even lead to taking in reflux acid into your lungs.

Umbilical hernias (those found at your waistline) and Inguinal hernias (those generally found in the groin area) can be created by lifting objects that are literally "gut wrenching" or people can also be born with a defect that can be "silent' until they weaken
