Personally, I would just buy some at Walgreens or Wal-Mart. They're nice to have around "just in case".
Do be careful though. There is a potential to damage the axillary nerve because of lots of weight concentrated on the armpits, where the axillary nerve crosses. I learned in anatomy & physiology of a condition where some feeling in the arm has been lost because the axillary nerve was damaged (I can't remember the name of the condition).
It's best to not have the crutches set too high (not too low as well!) so you can put most of your weight on your hands, use the armpit padding as support rather than the foundation. In other words put the majority of the weight on your hands rather than the armpits.
i have seen them for sale in the thrift shop don't know where you can rent them
I don't know where you can rent them, but try Craig's List to find someone in your area that is giving them away or trying to sell them at a cheap price.
Check any pharmacy. They have crutches you can buy for like $40. CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, Meijers...
